The study, published in Australian Mammalogy, utilized advanced ground-penetrating radar technology to map the intricate underground networks of wombat burrows. By focusing on the Richard Underwood Nature Refuge (RUNR) in southern Queensland, researchers compared burrow structures with those at Epping Forest National Park, where much of our current understanding of wombat habitats originates.
One of the key findings was the variation in burrow depth between the two sites. The sandy loam soils at RUNR provided a shallower yet structurally stable environment compared to the deeper sandy soils at Epping. This difference in soil type and burrow depth suggests that wombats may adapt their burrowing behavior based on local conditions, expanding the potential range of suitable habitats.
A Picky Species with a Surprising Flexibility
Andy Howe, ecologist and study contributor, highlights the importance of this discovery. "Northern hairy-nosed wombats are really picky about the soil profile for their burrows," he explains. "But the research showed that burrow structures can differ, which is an encouraging sign."
