Toyota's Comprehensive Strategy to Counter Vehicle Theft
Toyota is taking a multi-faceted approach to tackle the issue of vehicle theft, implementing advanced security measures across its entire model range. While the company has not disclosed specific details, it has confirmed that it is committed to enhancing vehicle security.
In 2025, Toyota introduced significant security upgrades to several models, including the New HiLux, LandCruiser 300, and LandCruiser Prado, providing owners with enhanced peace of mind. These improvements are not available as over-the-air software updates for existing vehicles, which means only new models benefit from these advancements.
Toyota is also developing new factory-approved accessories, such as an additional immobilizer, to further combat theft. The company promises to announce further updates soon, but it remains unclear if these accessories will be compatible with all Toyota vehicles or just those with the 'advanced protective measures'.
For existing vehicle owners who have fallen victim to theft, Toyota Australia is implementing a prioritization system to expedite the process of receiving replacement vehicles, ensuring they don't have to wait in long queues.
Toyota is advocating for a ban on devices used for vehicle theft and the regulation of legitimate devices used by locksmiths, mechanics, and other automotive professionals. In collaboration with police in Victoria and Queensland, Toyota has identified and countered the effectiveness of devices used by thieves.
The Queensland Police Service reported making seven arrests and laying 380 charges following a series of thefts in Brisbane in late 2025. These thefts involved a syndicate targeting LandCruisers and Prados, stealing 60 vehicles worth approximately $8 million for export to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The syndicate accessed the vehicles through the CAN bus port, disabling Toyota's satellite tracking device.
Police discovered two allegedly stolen vehicles entering a Rocklea wrecking yard on December 2, 2025, and subsequently located shipping containers containing multiple stolen LandCruisers and Prados in Brisbane and Melbourne. This operation highlights the ongoing efforts to combat vehicle theft and protect Toyota owners from potential losses.
