The Timbers began their 2026 MLS campaign—and Providence Park’s centennial celebration—by hosting the Columbus Crew. Head coach Phil Neville, in his third year at the helm, has made one message clear: the team must deliver.
The match wasted little time delivering drama. In the 6th minute, Wessam Abou Ali found space behind Portland’s defense and slammed a low shot past the goalkeeper to give Columbus an early 1-0 lead. Portland responded swiftly. A turnover in Columbus’s back line allowed Felipe Mora to pounce and slot home from close range, bringing the score level at 1-1.
Portland’s new signings were eager to make an impact. Cole Bassett, a standout addition from the Colorado Rapids, showcased his playmaking in style. In the 20th minute, Bassett initiated a rapid break, delivering a perfectly weighted pass to Antony, who finished to put the Timbers ahead 2-1. That goal marked Bassett’s first assist in Timbers colors.
Yet Columbus wouldn’t go away. Diego Rossi struck from distance, sending a shot low into the left corner to level the score again at 2-2.
The second half intensified as both teams pressed for the winner, but it wasn’t settled until the 88th minute when Ariel Lassiter found the back of the net, sealing a 3-2 home victory for Portland and setting the tone for the 2026 season.
Next up, the Timbers travel to Colorado to face the Rapids, with kickoff scheduled for 1:30 p.m. next Saturday.
