The Appeal of Mega-Ships

However, Major-Holland also highlights potential drawbacks. While designed to spread people out, these ships can feel crowded, especially in popular areas like buffets. Some ports can't accommodate their size, limiting itineraries, and even with a week-long cruise, it can be challenging to experience everything onboard.
The Cruise Industry's Take
The cruise industry seems to be embracing the mega-ship trend. Royal Caribbean, for example, has begun construction on its fifth Icon Class ship, set to launch in 2028. Norwegian Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line are also joining the race, with plans to launch their biggest ships yet.
Marilyn Macallair, a cruise travel analyst, traces this trend back to Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas, launched in 2009. The ship's unique features and creative design set a new standard.

According to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), among its member lines, 34% of ships are small, with less than 1,000 lower berths, while 39% are midsize, with between 1,000 and 3,000 berths. The remaining 28% are large ships with 3,000 or more lower berths.
CLIA emphasizes that this balance offers a range of options for travelers, from expedition and luxury experiences on smaller ships to large-scale vessels with extensive amenities.
