Rugby Legends Mike Tindall and Martin Johnson: A Race for a Cause (2026)

"Incredible legends of rugby unite for a noble cause!" This heartfelt statement captures the essence of an exciting upcoming event that promises not only thrilling competition but also a significant impact on those affected by motor neurone disease (MND).

Ed Slater, a former lock for Gloucester, has publicly expressed his gratitude and pride in seeing two remarkable figures from the rugby world, Mike Tindall and Martin Johnson CBE, compete against each other in a charity cycling race. This event is set to take place on March 28, where they will embark on a challenging 45-mile (72 km) ride starting from their home ground and ending at Birmingham's Villa Park. The purpose? To raise vital funds for the 4ED Foundation, which supports individuals battling MND.

Since being diagnosed with this progressive and debilitating illness in 2022, Slater made the difficult decision to retire from professional rugby. He remarked, "It is a tremendous honor to know that two absolute legends of the game, along with others yet to be revealed, will participate in this important challenge."

The excitement doesn’t stop here; more former rugby stars are expected to join the race in the weeks leading up to the event, as announced by Gloucester Rugby. The funds generated through this charitable endeavor will provide essential aid to those impacted by MND, including modifications to homes, outings for caregivers, and mental health resources.

Additionally, it’s noteworthy that at least 25% of the proceeds will be directed to former England captain Lewis Moody and his family, or his selected charity, following his own diagnosis in October. This adds a deeply personal touch to the event, emphasizing the urgency and importance of supporting MND research and awareness.

The competition will coincide with the annual Slater Cup, a prestigious match contested between Gloucester and the Leicester Tigers, both of which hold significant value for Slater. Reflecting on this, he shared, "Gloucester and Leicester have been pivotal in my life, and I am eternally thankful for the support they have extended to me and my family, particularly over these past three years."

However, the Slater Cup represents much more than mere rivalry on the field. As Slater passionately stated, "This initiative is about raising awareness for this devastating illness and generating funds to assist those affected by it. With the collective influence of Tindall, Johnson, and others, I believe we can make a substantial difference in the MND community."
