When the fixture list was announced, it was expected that this match would be a crucial contest in the battle to avoid relegation. However, the reality has been quite different.
Burnley is already facing the stark reality of relegation. With a 10-point gap between them and safety in the Premier League table (as of the weekend), they need to start winning matches if they have any chance of an unlikely survival. Their current form is a stark contrast to Sunderland's.
Sunderland, on the other hand, is still eyeing the top half of the table. While they are not yet concerned about relegation, they are aiming for a comfortable mid-table finish on their return to the top flight. And they have a strong home record, having yet to lose at the Stadium of Light. The majority of their points have been earned on home soil, making them favorites to secure a win on Monday night.
At the time of writing, the odds for a Sunderland victory are 4/5, which is expected given their recent success and Burnley's struggles.
However, I find Burnley's approach to the game fascinating. Despite the criticism of Scott Parker's Premier League record, I believe he is a clever manager who understands the dynamics of certain clubs.
Last season, during their Championship campaign, Burnley's away games at Sunderland and Leeds showcased an interesting strategy. Parker knows that frustrating the crowd can be an advantage, especially in venues with good atmospheres. For instance, Burnley committed 20 fouls when they lost 1-0 to Sunderland, while they had 12 fouls (combined with slow play) when they won 1-0 at Leeds.
Cards were a common occurrence in both matches, and I'm willing to take the 17/10 odds on OVER 4.5, along with a smaller bet on OVER 6.5 at 8s. Last season's trip to Sunderland resulted in a total of seven cards, with Dan Neil sent off, while there were nine cards at Leeds with Bashir Humphreys shown a red. The crowd's frustration can easily translate onto the pitch.
Burnley's recent matches have also been card-heavy. Their December visit to Newcastle resulted in five cards, with a red card for Lucas Pires. In October, they lost to Aston Villa, with Burnley committing 15 fouls and four match cards. Both of these matches were played in stadiums known for their lively atmospheres.
Referee Paul Tierney has only officiated two Premier League games this season, which is surprising. However, he did issue five yellow cards in Brighton's recent 1-1 draw with Bournemouth. If Burnley adopts a strategy aimed at frustrating the opposition, Tierney is likely to be busy.
