Bryan Bertino's 2008 home-invasion thriller left an indelible mark on Petsch, and countless others. The film's unsettling premise, rooted in senseless violence inspired by the Manson murders and other gruesome homicides, struck a nerve. "It could actually happen," Petsch reflects, imagining the chilling sight of three violent strangers appearing at your doorstep. This haunting thought lingered in her mind.
The original script's ambiguous ending, leaving Liv Tyler's character in a suspenseful cliffhanger, intrigued Petsch. She wondered about the untold story beyond that moment. "I liked that it was open to interpretation," she admits.
Fast forward to 2022, when Petsch was presented with a bold idea: not one, but three interconnected spinoff films, culminating in the upcoming 'The Strangers: Chapter 3' and its two prequels, all under the direction of Renny Harlin. Initially skeptical, Petsch questioned the intention behind remaking such an iconic film.
However, the truth behind this trilogy is far from a simple remake. Producer Courtney Solomon envisioned it as a means to re-establish the slasher franchise, which had veered off course with varying tones and timelines. The 'Strangers' trilogy starring Petsch was crafted as a cohesive narrative from the outset. 'The Strangers Chapter 1' (2024) intentionally mirrored the visual and narrative style of the 2008 original, setting the stage for the subsequent chapters.
Petsch praises this approach, seeing it as a calculated move to engage the audience. "They're creating a foundation to launch into the story they want to tell—the aftermath of that chilling awakening," she explains. "It's a bold and daring strategy."
The trilogy's ambitious scope went beyond the script. Filmed back-to-back, Petsch was given the rare opportunity to develop her character, Maya, across three feature-length films, with a comprehensive psychological blueprint in hand. "As an artist, crafting a character arc across three films simultaneously is a rare privilege," she enthuses. "You rarely receive such a wealth of material upfront."
The initial plan was to release the trilogy in quick succession, immersing viewers in Maya's harrowing journey. However, reshoots and logistical challenges extended the process to four years. Despite this, the trilogy's conceptual vision remained intact. Maya's story isn't just about surviving a single terrifying encounter; it's about living with the lingering trauma of a nightmare that has resonated in pop culture for nearly two decades.
Petsch highlights the unique evolution of her character, who becomes both the antagonist and protagonist, challenging the conventions of the genre. This long-form narrative also underscores the differences between film and television, a distinction Petsch, known for her role in 'Riverdale,' is keen to emphasize in an industry that often blurs these lines.
"Film and television share the act of acting, but the intention behind each choice is what sets them apart," Petsch observes. "In film, you can ensure your character's journey is coherent and meaningful."
Petsch's involvement in the trilogy extended beyond acting. She actively participated in its development, collaborating daily on rewrites, shot lists, and casting decisions. Eventually, she took on a producer role, emphasizing that it was a recognition of her creative contribution rather than a transactional arrangement. "I was fortunate to work with someone who valued my abilities and wanted me to be an integral part of the process," she says.
For Petsch, horror remains the genre that fosters the deepest trust and creativity. "It's where we take the biggest risks and find the most intriguing characters," she asserts.
With another horror project already in the works, Petsch believes the 'Strangers' saga will continue to captivate audiences. "These characters are inherently eerie and make for compelling antagonists and villains. I wouldn't be surprised if someone else is inspired to revisit this world," she teases.
