Bold claim, big stakes: Justin Gaethje isn’t just chasing a title—he’s racing the clock.
In January, Gaethje will headline UFC 324 against Paddy Pimblett for the interim lightweight belt. With Ilia Topuria taking an extended leave and no clear return date, the UFC created this interim title bout. At 37, Gaethje understands this could be his last real opportunity to wear UFC gold.
On his YouTube channel, Gaethje laid it out plainly: this isn’t the start of a fresh chapter. “This is my last chance,” he said. If he wins the interim title, he’ll get another shot at Topuria, who many consider the division’s most formidable foe right now. That potential path—win the interim, then go after the undisputed crown—could cap his career exactly where he’s always fought: at the highest level.
Gaethje has long tested himself against top competition, earning a reputation for relentless pressure and hard-fought clashes. He’s held an interim title and even the “BMF” belt, but the undisputed lightweight throne has remained elusive. He’s frank about the work ahead: perfection for 25 minutes, seven weeks from now.
“I’m aiming for a perfect fight, and when I’m near perfection, you have to catch a break to beat me,” Gaethje said. Yet he acknowledges the many variables that can swing a fight. He’s doubled down on preparation—last week, this week, and every day until fight night—to be ready to finish Pimblett and secure a shot at the title on the UFC’s biggest stage.
Looking beyond January, Gaethje keeps a pragmatic eye on the future. If he defeats Topuria, the next steps will unfold in time, but his focus remains squarely on Pimblett.
UFC 324 is set for January 24 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
